Why Chery Built TIGGO V Around the Realities of Indonesian Roads

OTOJATIM - Indonesia’s roads, weather and family-oriented mobility have shaped Chery’s latest vehicle in a way that goes beyond styling. The TIGGO V was developed after Chery spent more than two years studying how Indonesian consumers actually use their cars.

“The development of TIGGO V started from the real needs of Indonesian consumers. Based on our research, consumers need a vehicle that can meet family needs, handle various road conditions, remain comfortable to drive, and stay flexible for productivity and hobbies,” said Budi Darmawan Jantania, Vice Country Director of Chery Business Unit. 

The development process began in February 2024 through Chery’s T1TP project. Its global R&D team conducted field research in Indonesia to understand road conditions, mobility patterns and family needs.

The research covered situations that are familiar to Indonesian drivers. Chery studied steep roads, uneven surfaces, flooded sections, hot weather and long family trips. The team also looked at how consumers carry equipment for work and outdoor activities. 

Those findings helped shape the vehicle’s key requirements. Chery identified the need for high ground clearance, hill-climbing capability, a rugged design and a spacious three-row cabin.

Modern connectivity, effective air conditioning and fuel efficiency were also included in the research findings. The result was a profile for a multi-purpose vehicle aimed at daily use, family travel and activities that require additional carrying flexibility. 

That research eventually moved from concept to product. Chery first presented the Chery X concept at the 2025 GJAW before introducing TIGGO V at GIIAS 2026.

The TIGGO V carries Chery’s “Specially Built for Indonesia” philosophy. Its design combines three vehicle roles in one platform: an SUV, a seven-seat MPV and a double-cab-style utility vehicle.

The cabin can be configured for two, four, five or seven occupants. The rear section can also be arranged to carry equipment for outdoor activities or productivity needs. 

Its physical dimensions reflect the vehicle’s focus on space and capability. TIGGO V measures 4,910 mm long, 1,921 mm wide and 1,790 mm tall, with 220 mm of ground clearance.

Chery says the vehicle can handle inclines of up to 41 degrees and water crossings up to 700 mm deep. An Easy Turn system can also reduce the turning radius by around 0.5 metres by using the rear braking system. 

The tropical climate also influenced the cabin design. TIGGO V features an Air Flow Calibration System together with air-conditioning vents for the third row and C-pillars, aiming to distribute cooling more evenly throughout the cabin.

Powertrain options include an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and Chery Super Hybrid (CSH). Chery claims a driving range of up to 1,030 km and thermal efficiency of up to 42.5 percent. 

At GIIAS 2026, Chery displayed two TIGGO V units to demonstrate the concept. One was presented in an SUV/MPV configuration with three rows, while another showed the double-cab format with an open rear section. 

The Indonesian connection is also significant for Chery’s global product story. TIGGO V was officially introduced at GIIAS 2026 as its first debut outside China. 

Rather than treating Indonesia simply as another destination for a global model, Chery’s development process for TIGGO V shows how local road conditions, climate and consumer habits can influence the character of a vehicle from the ground up.
