OTOJATIM - Indonesia's commercial vehicle industry continues to move toward higher-value products as manufacturers introduce technologies focused on safety, passenger comfort, and fleet efficiency. At the 2026 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), PT Hino Motors Sales Indonesia (HMSI) unveiled the Hino Bus RM 280 ABS Retarder, reflecting how the country's bus market is embracing more sophisticated engineering for modern passenger transport.

The RM 280 ABS Retarder showcases the direction of Indonesia's bus industry, where vehicle development increasingly emphasizes advanced safety features alongside operational performance. Powered by Hino's Euro 4 J08E-WD engine producing 280 PS, the new model is equipped with an Electromagnetic Retarder, an auxiliary braking system that slows the vehicle without placing additional strain on the primary braking system. The technology improves safety on long descents while reducing brake wear and maintenance requirements.
Hino has also incorporated a Space Frame chassis, creating a larger through-type luggage compartment beneath the passenger cabin. The expanded cargo area allows operators to carry more luggage and freight, offering additional revenue opportunities. Passenger comfort is enhanced by Air Suspension, which minimizes vibration and delivers a smoother ride for tourism coaches and intercity services.
The introduction of the RM 280 ABS Retarder reflects broader changes within Indonesia's commercial vehicle sector. Bus manufacturers are increasingly integrating technologies that improve safety, driving comfort, and operational efficiency as fleet operators seek vehicles capable of meeting higher service standards.
Beyond the new bus, Hino displayed several commercial vehicles serving different business segments. The Hino 300 Series 136 HDX was presented as a versatile light-duty truck powered by a 4.009-litre Euro 4 diesel engine producing 136 PS for applications ranging from construction to refrigerated logistics. Meanwhile, the Hino 500 Series FLX 280 JW targeted long-haul freight operations with a 280 PS Euro 4 engine and a nine-speed transmission. Visitors also saw the Hino 500 Series FM 280 JD configured as a fire truck, highlighting the adaptability of Hino's chassis for specialised applications.
Hino also used GIIAS 2026 to showcase its Total Support ecosystem through dedicated after-sales, digital, and training zones. The company highlighted digital fleet management platforms such as Hino Connect and MyHino, alongside training programmes delivered through Hino Indonesia Academy, illustrating how Indonesia's commercial vehicle industry is expanding beyond manufacturing into integrated mobility solutions.
